A Different Type of Team Event

There are currently 30+ titles to choose from, suitable for a range of purposes from team building and away days to general explorations of leadership and the principles of success, to more targeted thinking about specific themes such as goal setting, emotional intelligence, risk management, decision making & many more.

All events started out as online network events for a mixed audience of leaders, business owners, and managers from a broad range of different industries. Refined and updated, they are now available to corporate teams to commission directly, either in their original short format, or as extended half, or full, day events incorporating bespoke organisational objectives.

A fun, quirky, and surprisingly effective, alternative to conventional team building, leadership development and executive awaydays.

For ease of reference, titles are loosely categorised into four distinct collections, click on the links below to explore:

Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a selection of the most frequently asked questions about Team events. If you have a different question, or would like to know more about any of these events,

Who Are These Events For?

Who Are These Events For?

Logo graphic

All events are designed to be suitable for a wide range of corporate purposes from team building and executive awaydays to leadership development and motivational workshops.

Examples include:
  • Executive teams that need space away from the white noise of everyday business to think honestly and creatively about where they are now and where they want to be.
  • Teams that are under performing or struggling to hit targets and need encouragement to think more positively
  • Teams that are emerging from periods of sustained difficulty and challenge who need to rebuild focus and trust
  • Next generation leaders who have shared learning objectives around specific areas of leadership and business development
  • Newly established teams who need to build relationships and engagement with the organisation’s goals
  • Events can also act as light-hearted ice-breakers and/or morale/energy boosts in between more formal agenda items of corporate retreats

Where Do Team Events Take Place?

Where Do Team Events Take Place?

Logo graphic

Team events can take place online or in person – either on site, or at a venue of your choosing.

In person events do offer a little more opportunity for the facilitator to read the room, adjust the energy, & address any interpersonal tensions whilst building on emerging themes. They are also better for full day events.

On-line works well for short morale boosting events or ice breakers where time may be restricted – or when distance would be an object.

What Is The Minimum & Maximum Number Of Participants?

What Is The Minimum & Maximum Number Of Participants?

Logo graphic

There is no real minimum or maximum.

Events can work just as well for partnerships of just two or three people as for larger groups. The difference is that, with fewer people we will have more time to think more deeply about specific issues the team would like to explore.

As a guide, the optimum number for getting the most out of these types of events is somewhere between 8 – 20.

Larger groups may require more than one facilitator. This could be someone from your own team – in which case we will need to build in a little preparation time, or I have other trusted coach colleagues that I can invite to join us.

Does Content Allow Time To Focus On Specific Team Objectives?

Does Content Allow Time To Focus On Specific Team Objectives?

Logo graphic

The short answer is YES – depending on the event that you select and the time you are able to invest, there is capacity to create a bespoke event where participants are focusing their attention on specific team objectives.

As a foundation, all titles are full formed and ready to go as two-hour, ‘off the peg’ events where discussion is guided by the prepared content.

Some titles are designed to stimulate wide ranging discussion for the purposes of team building or leadership development, others are designed around a specific theme to prompt more focused thinking such as teamwork, project management, emotional intelligence, etc, etc. If you have a specific theme in mind, you can use the filters on the relevant pages to help narrow down your search for a title that best suits your needs.

If you are looking for something completely unique to your team, extra thinking time (in the form of questions or activities) can be integrated into the content to focus attention on specific team objectives. This does require a little more time – which is why there is the option to choose longer half, or full, day programmes.

The starting point is to identify the title(s) that best suits your needs and we can then work out together how, and where, to integrate any extra thinking time for best effect.

Do In Person Events Involve Any Particular Equipment?

Do In Person Events Involve Any Particular Equipment?

Logo graphic

No – the difference between these events & other more conventional team activities lies in our use of story-telling & metaphor rather than any physical activity.

All that is required is a room that is big enough to accommodate the numbers of people you would like to attend & the means to present the accompanying slides. Access to a break-out room may be useful for bigger groups.

For History or Natural World events, you may wish to arrange an appropriately themed venue to create a more immersive experience - e.g. a tudor hotel or a wildlife conference room - subject to practicalities.

Do Participants Need To Prepare In Any Way?

Do Participants Need To Prepare In Any Way?

Depending on the event you have chosen, I may send a few very brief notes for participants to read through in advance. The purpose of these notes is generally just to provide some context &, if it is an event from the history collection to introduce participants to some key characters so they feel more familiar on the day. They will literally take no more than three or four minutes to read.

What People Are Saying

I hired Karen to facilitate her event "Divorced, beheaded, died" (which is centred around the lives of Henry VIII`s 6 wives) for a group of managers in my organisation. The event was a total success thanks to Karen`s meticulous and thoughtful approach. The content of the session kept us all engaged throughout and afterwards there were comments about losing interest at various points of previous management-based team building events, whereas with Karen`s session that was not the case. Karen was particularly adept at bringing our focus back to the relationship between the content of the session and our own context. Karen offers a range of different themes for her events and I specifically chose this theme because I felt we needed a departure from our day-to-day contexts, but Karen struck the balance very well. I would 100% recommend Karen`s events to other corporate teams looking for an opportunity to reflect and learn about management in a thought provoking way.

Chris Beane

Divisional Director, Howden Insurance Local UK

Karen’s interactive session "Divorced, Beheaded, Died" was eye opening. By drawing lessons from history, she helped us uncover fresh perspectives on the challenges we face today. The session was engaging and thought provoking. With more time, the option to incorporate coaching strategies would have made the experience even more impactful. I would highly recommend Karen to anyone looking for a unique and insightful approach to leadership development.

Francesca Lucano

Lead Educator – Professional Development & Education Team, UHB

Karen’s session with our team was insightful, energising, and incredibly thought-provoking. The unique framing of the session through the story of Barney’s racing career brought the concepts to life in a way that was both relatable and memorable. It helped ground the discussion in real-world parallels and made complex ideas feel more accessible.

The session sparked honest reflections and valuable conversations across the team, helping us understand not only our individual approaches but also how we work together. It felt tailored, relevant, and perfectly timed for where we are in our journey.

Thanks Karen Carpenter for an amazing taster of what your leadership courses are all about. The guys really enjoyed it! Highly recommend to anyone looking for leadership and training courses to support growing teams!!

Stuart Danks

Group Managing Director, DMOS People

I`ve had the pleasure of participating in three of Karen`s online seminars which have been fantastic. Karen takes a topic, sometimes based on history, sometimes on her own personal experience, and uses this as a powerful metaphor, encouraging participants to consider things from a different perspective and applying the learning to their work context. The seminars have been engaging and informative, and Karen is clearly passionate about the subjects of the seminars and the lessons we can learn today in our leadership roles.
